Mike Miller ~ Top Gas Champion

After finishing second last year, this racer led us through one of the most dramatic final races in recent memory.  Going into the final round of the last point’s race, there were THREE racers who were tied in points total and in round wins total.  When it came to head-to-head, Pappel had the lead over Rene Crunelle.  And with the lead over Pappel, was your champion.

At the first event of the season, which was held at the Bi-Mart sponsored Tulip Festival Drags, eliminations were halted during the semi-final round, which left four racers tied for the lead: Debbie Dawson, Mile Miller, Richard Dietrich, and Ron Pappel. Then came the Oldies But Goodies, and a pair of new-to-2015 finalist with Don Budd earning the victory over Ralph Cramblit after laying down a stellar .027 package. At the next event, the final round came down to a narrow victory for Mark Dawson over Rene Crunelle. With only two events remaining, the point standings were as follows: Mark Dawson, Rene Crunelle, and Mike Miller all tied for first with 170, and Ron Pappel and Debbie Dawson right behind at 160.  The final two races were set to be ever so exciting!

At the Hot Rod Nationals, the final round showdown came to Cliff Mansfield and Mike Miller, with Mansfield earning the wire-to-wire event win.  With Miller’s runner-up, he leapfrogged into number one in the points standings (240), closely followed by Crunelle (230), Pappel (210), D. Dawson (200), and Mark Dawson (200).

At the final event of the season, the tight nit point’s battle didn’t disappoint.  With Mike Miller being eliminated first round, his total was locked in at 270 points.  In the second round, Rene Crunelle could blast into the lead with a round win, but was defeated by Barry Roberts who had a .005 package, so Crunelle was also locked in at 270 points, losing the head-to-head tiebreaker with Miller. By advancing to the final round, Ron Pappel also had 270 points, but was losing the head-to-head tiebreaker with Mike Miller.  Therefore, he would have to win the race over Barry Roberts. Both driver’s left with green reaction times, and at the top end of the track running right on his number with a 0 was…Barry Roberts! Meaning that the season championship, decided by the 6th overall tiebreaker, belonged to Mike Miller.
