Julie Adams ~ Super Pro Champion

Super Pro is by far the most diverse of the Sunoco series held at Woodburn Dragstrip.  In it’s history, dating back to the late 1970’s, no driver has ever earned back-to-back championships. Drivers have come close, most recently with Devon Hilton finishing 3rd in his championship defense year. How would Loretta McCool do defending her championship in 2014?

Everything began at the first event, which was shortened to 1/8th mile due to rain showers With that first event came a win for Tom Avgerakis over Danny Wargnier, with the margin of victory at the finish line separated by .0017. The following event, held under brilliant blue skies at the NWDRA Classic, showcased Paul Nero getting the win over Devon Hilton in the final match. The following event again featured Nero in the final round, but this time he was defeated by Julie Adams via a .025 package. At the first June event, it was a pair of new final round finishers when Mike Nicholson defeated the team of Bill/Tony McNeal.  Following a weekend with two new-to 2014 final rounders, it was a pair of repeats when Danny Wargnier scored his first win of the season via a holeshot over Julie Adams. With June 8ths events in the books, the points standings were as follows: Adams in first with 340, Wargnier second with 310, Avgerakis in third with 290, Hilton fourth with 280, and a four-way tie for 5th between Traci DePeel, Robert Glembocki, Dan/Vicki Shepherd, and Dennis Weddle at 240 points.

June 14th meant Saturday of the Rose Festial Drags, and it brought Mike McManus into the Winner’s Circle when he defeated Kirby Olmsted in a final round separated by only .0094. Next up was Traci DePeel and Devon Hilton doing battle at the last June event of 2014, and the win went to DePeel when she packaged a .031 run to defeat the 2012 Super Pro Champion.  The following event had a pair of center-steer machines in the final round when Dave Sattem eliminated Michael Boyd in the final round of competition.  Following that, Tom Avgerakis scored a crucial victory after defeating three team members on his way to the event win over Roger Weddle. With just one race remaining, the points sheet read had Avgerakis on top with 540 points, Julie Adams second with 530, Danny Wargnier and Devon Hilton third and fourth with 500 a piece, and Traci DePeel fifth with 480 points. The final event would be crucial.

At the August 16th event, held the day before the Hillyers Mid City/Stayton Ford Fever Classic, the battle was set to be fierce between the top five in points.  Right off the bat Traci DePeel went down to Danny Wargnier, and points leader Tom Avgerakis was eliminated in the first round when he broke out by .006 against Gary Barr.  Round two: Danny Wargnier won his match, and Julie Adams downed number one qualifier Devon Hilton. With Adams now having a three-round lead over second place Wargnier, Adams could seal the championship with a win in the quarterfinal round. By .016 thousandths of a second, Gary Wargnier turned on the red light against Adams, meaning she would lay claim to the championship in Super Pro.  Danny Wargnier won the battle when he defeated Adams in the semi’s, before losing to event winner Matt Claussen in the finals.  At the ET Finals, Super Pro suffered a strange ‘off-year’ where eight of the representatives of Team Woodburn were defeated in round one.  However, the remaining racers (Rene Crunelle, Danny Wargnier, Bill McNeal, Vicki Shepherd, Robert Glembocki, Devon Hilton, and Gary Palmateer) combined to earn 11 points in the insanely tight championship that Team Woodburn earned.
