John Masterman ~ Super Shifter Champion

The Super Shifter class this year featured a three-way fight-for-the-championship at the final race of the season.  With three racers remaining in the hunt, and those three all advancing to the semi-finals, it would come down to the last round of the season to determine the champion.

At the first completed event of the season, the final round showdown was between Mark Boehi and John Masterman, with Boehi getting the win after Masterman turned on the red light by -.019.  At the next event, which was held the first weekend of July, it was Bruce Poppino who beat John Flett, with the final round again decided on a red light start. After two events have been completed, the point standings were as follows: Boehi with 160 Points, Poppino with 150, and Masterman with 120 points.

At the penultimate event, John Masterman burst into the scene when he won over Poppino, who was attending his second straight final round. With Masterman’s win, it pushed him to third place with 200 points, sitting behind Poppino and Boehi who were both tied with 210.  The final event was upon us on September 28. Round after round was completed with none of the top three going out, until it reached the breaking point.  In the semi-final round, there were three racers left: Masterman, Poppino, and Boehi.  The winner of the event would be the champion, the runner-up would finish 2nd, and the semi-finalist would end the season in third place.  With Poppino defeating Boehi in a double-breakout finish, and Masterman earning the single, it would be a showdown for the championship.  Unfortunately for Poppino, another red light ended his race early, and Masterman earned his fourth championship in Woodburn Dragstrip history.
