Bernd Scores Big, Munteanu wins at 29th Annual NW VW Bug Run

The 29th Annual NW VW Bug Run presented by the Rose City Volksters was run under gorgeous blue skies.  An amazing day of racing brought along the highest car show quality Volkswagens, as well as a wide stretching swap meet area that seemed to never end. At the end of eliminations, Brian Marvin (Heads-Up Showdown), Bernd Arndt (Pro & King of the Hill), Norbert Munteanu (Sportsman), and Trevor Matney (Run Tuff).  Ricky the Racer (Elverud) claimed victory in the Burnout Contest near the end of the day, putting a cap on a day filled with fun, amazing clubs, and of course, the V-Dubs!

Armstrong Volkswagen of Gladstone sponsored the first running of the Heads-Up Showdown Eliminator category, featuring all-out non-bracket Volkswagens.  Brian Marvin was the number one qualifier with a 9.602 at a blistering 142.36mph. Beau Judge (10.127 @137.50) and James Schuchard (10.206 @137.38) rounded out the top three.  In the semi-final round, wins were awarded to Marvin and Judge, but unfortunate situations arose as both Marvin and Judge broke their cars in their semi-final wins.  With that, the great people at Armstrong Volkswagen of Gladstone agreed that a ‘tie’ was to be granted.  With the success of this first year’s event, the Heads-Up Showdown would surely be a staple in the event.

In the Pro category, Bernd Arndt and Brad Roberts got down to business in the final round to determine the Pro winner. Bernd Arndt defeated Joey Felix, Jason Delany, Jeff Dole, and Craig Habbs, while Brad Roberts defeated Tom Forbis, Michael Vickers, a single, and Devon Hilton to reach the finals. What was set up to be a great final ended before it even began as Brad Roberts turned on the red light, handing the automatic victory to Arndt. Arndt then defeated the Sportsman Runner-Up and Winner to earn King of the Hill honors.

For the Sportsman category, it was Norbert Monteanu and Todd Getty fighting to see who would be the event champion.  Monteanu downed Jeffery Hall, last year’s Burnout Queen Laura Horton, a single, and Mike Canon to reach the finals.  Opposite him was Getty, who defeated Dave Wright, Dave Bench and Deena Dole before earning a single in the semi’s.  In the final round, Monteanu had the starting line advantage and never looked back as he cruised to the win.

The list of thank-yous for this amazing event stretch long and far, from Armstrong Volkswagen of Gladstone for sponsoring the Heads-Up Showdown, to the Rose City Volksters crew and volunteers for presenting the event, to all of the clubs present, to all of the participants in the Car Show and Swap Meet. A final reminder to all Volkswagen competitors that the next ET Volkswagen Series will be held on June 29th, and the next major event will be the Double J Motorwerks presented Pacific Waterland event on September 7th.
