Saturday’s Suncoco Race Fuels ET Series Wrap-Up – Rose Festival Drags
The Saturday edition of the Sunbelt Rentals & Bi-Mart 38th Annual Rose Festival Drags produced electrifying speeds and dynamically close drag racing. In the end, wins were scored by Gary Palmateer (Super Pro), Dave Bronec (Pro), Gordon Cady Jr (Sportsman), Gary Tokos (Motorcycle), and Emmett McKillop (Super Comp). However, this was simply day one, as with the Sunoco Race Fuels ET Series having a second day of racing there was also completion to be had in all of the other categories running on this beautiful weekend.
The Super Pro finals featured a pair of new-to-2013 finalist in the form of Gary Palmateer and Devon Hilton. Palmateer’s road to the final was through Emmet McKillop, Gary Wargnier, Jerry Jackson, Bill Heard, and a single in the semi-finals. For Hilton, competitors were Sadie Floyd, Danny Wargnier, Paul Nero, Roger Weddle, and Billy King. In the final round, Hilton had the better reaction time (.004 versus a .012) but broke out by just .005, giving the win to Palmateer. Of special note, Robert Glembocki earned the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with his .008 package.
In Pro bracket, the final round consisted of Dave Bronec and Nicholas Shepherd. Bronec’s journey included beating Rick Sales Sr, Richard Beyea, John Maul, Fred Nelson, and Matt Kielman. For Shepherd, in his first final of the year, point’s leader Tom Jackson III, Pam Hitchcock, Tony Price, and Steve Kelly were the opponents defeated before he earned a single in the semis. In the final round, Bronec cut a great .018 reaction time to gain over .03 hundredths of a second advantage, and used that to seal the deal at the finish line. Shepherd’s win of the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with a .020 helped to ease the sting.
Sportsman competition consisted of two of the heavy hitters battling off in the final round. In the blue corner was Gordon Cady Jr, who downed Tracy Herinckx, Angelo Palamaris, Tony Bombara, and Derrick Jackson. In the red corner: Jerry Durant Jr, who took out Glenn Burbage, Ted Hill, Jerry Weber, and Jamie Ladd. With the 12th round bell being rung, Cady Jr’s .035 package was enough to put away Durant Jr, and earn the victory. John Floyd Jr was the winner of the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with a .029 package.
Motorcycle class eliminations showcased a Harley and a Kawasaki in the final round. The Harley: Gary Tokos, took down Mike Graver, Michael Gosselin, and Shane White. For the Kawasaki: Randy Whiteman, battlers included a laddered single, Jim Werre, and Van Smith. In the final round, the race was over when Randy Whiteman turned on the red light start, handing the victory over to Gary Tokos.
The Power Punch Pacific Northwest Super Comp Series came into town on Saturday and Sunday, holding elimination races on both days. Emmett McKillop took out Tom Buchand, Tom Gresham, and Rick Dearinger. Greg Pessemier downed Ed Hauter, Charles Linne, and Marcia Miller. In the final round, Pessemier had a perfect .000 reaction time, earning himself membership into the Perfect Light Club Sponsored by Northwest Wholesale suppliers of Goodyear and Hoosier Race Tires, but was unable to get the car to run the number, giving the win to McKillop.
Final round results are listed in order of driver name, hometown, (vehicle year and make/model), [reaction time], elapsed time, miles per hour, and (dial-in).
