Top Gas Champion – Richard Dietrich
In one of the more exciting classes of the year, Nostalgia Hot Rod Series Top Gas Champion Richard Dietrich made it two for two in this category, which pits fast cars with Electronics against one another.
At the first event of the season on April 21, Don Paine claimed victory over Mark Dawson. At the next event on May 5th, Dietrich scored his first victory by taking out Marty Stewart in the final. At the Oldies but Goodies, Devon Hilton took the victory over Gary Palmateer in a race decided by thousandths of a second. Palmateer would record a 2nd place finish again at the July 7th event, falling victim to Travis Hilton. At this time, the points were as follows: Palmateer had the lead with 180, Gary Wargnier was second with 170, and third was a three way tie between Dietrich, T. Hilton, and Tony Schroeder. The next event spiced things up even more, with Barry Roberts taking the Hot Rod Nationals win over Travis Hilton, leaving the points standings going into the final event tighter than ever. With the top SIX cars all having a chance to win the championship at the final race, it was Richard Dietrich who, in come from behind fashion, won the race to take the points lead, and his second straight Top Gas Championship.
