Sport Compact Sportsman Champion – Hoppy Hopkins
The Sports Compact Sportsman title was won in a way that will go down for the ages. Christina Presser jumped out to the commanding lead, but a late-season charge by Hoppy Hopkins and his 1993 Honda were able to take the win by a rounds-win tie breaker at the last race. Both drivers finished with a 230 point total, but because of Hopkins 7 round wins in comparison to Christina’s 4, the championship was sealed.
At the opening event on April 29, Bryan Santino took out Kyle Hall through the grueling 4 round race. Presser had an early exit in the first round, but would still have three rounds over Hopkins, who didn’t show up. At the next event, Christina took a big lead by driving to the final round victory of Thomas Major. At the following event on June 30th, racing was halted after the first round meaning that all remaining competitors would receive 40 points. July 21st showed the victory for Jody Kelly, wife of former National Champion Steve Kelly, over Hoppy Hopkins. At this point with two races remaining, Presser had a points total of 170 points in first place, Hopkins in 2nd with 120 points, and Bryan Santino in 3rd with 110 points. August 5th brought the second to last event for the Sports Compact Sportsman racers, and was a pivotal one for Hopkins after taking out Presser in the final. Now, the points standings were as following for the two front runners of the class: Presser with 200 and Hopkins with 170. At the final, Hopkins would have to win the event and Presser would have to go out in the first round, and those exact things happened. Hopkins completed his SC Sportsman tear without a first round loss and two event wins.
Final points standings were as followed, by position, driver name, points total, and round wins.
1. Hoppy Hopkins, 230 Points, 7 Round Wins
2. Christina Presser, 230 Points, 4 Round Wins
3. Bryan Santino, 110 Points, 7 Round Wins
