Motorcycle Champion – Mark Adams
The Sunoco Race Fuels ET Motorcycle/Sled category was a battle for the ages. At the midway point, it seemed that Mark Adams had the series in a stranglehold, with a 70 point lead over second place Roger Wolff. But as we know, things can change quickly in the sport of drag racing.
After respective wins by Adams (April 15th), Don DePeel (April 22nd), Kerry Drost (May 12th), Wolff (May 19th), and Adams (June 9th), Adams had a point’s total of 330, second place Wolff had 260, and third place DePeel had accumulated 230. The next event on June 10th showcased a new winner, in the form of Jim Werre, over Nick Puhl. Following that, DePeel was able to get closer and closer to points leader Adams with back-to-back wins (July 8th and July 21st), both over Adams. At the third to last race on August 11th, Stacy Hesch took the win over Mark Adams. So now, with two races to go the point’s standings were as follows: Adams with 440, DePeel with 380, and Werre with 340. At the second to last points race, Jim Werre took the win over DePeel, setting up a monster battle for first place between Adams and DePeel. At the August 18th finale, despite DePeel winning the race and Adams first round exit, the points lead was too large, earning the championship for Mark Adams.
