Jackson Bros. Dominate National Dragster Challenge & King Of The Track
The day was Sunday. The date was the 30th, the last day of September. The event, the one everyone had waited the year for, the National Dragster Challenge and Summit Racing Equipment King of the Track race. Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle, and Juniors all had a shot for a Wally, but only six were delivered from the multitude of racers. Some faces were familiar, some not as much. In Super Pro, Barry Roberts won his first Wally in over 30 years of racing over Devon Hilton, a two-time National Dragster Challenge winner. In Pro, Thomas Jackson III also scored his first ever Wally by beating Chris Williams, who two rounds previous had a .005 package. In Sportsman, it was a familiar story as Derrick Jackson was able to double up with his brother to win. Derrick used a startling line advantage to back into Kathy Figini and take the win. In Motorcycle, it was a battle of the Jim’s as Jim Were took the win after Jim Funderburg red lit his chances away. In the consolation race (Run Tuff), Matt Claussen took the win in his dragster after Pat Figini red lit in his Mustang.
In the Jr. Dragster action, Emily Mix emerged victorious in a battle of the ladies after she was able to out run Kacee Pitts for the win and the Wally. In Jr. Thunder, Katie Day took out Josh Schmanke after Schmanke broke out. In Jr. Tuff, Spencer David used experience to take the win over Josh McMyne.
Finally, the last event of the day was the King of the Track race. The four Track Champions were Devon Hilton (Super Pro), Nicholas Shepherd (Pro), Derrick Jackson (Sportsman), and Mark Adams (Motorcycle). Hilton and Shepherd matched up first round, as did Jackson and Adams. Nicholas emerged victorious over Devon after Hilton took the starting line advantage (.005 to .010) but wasn’t able to run the number. Jackson then took the win over Adams after Adams broke out trying to catch Jackson’s Dodge Truck. So then the final was set: Jackson and Shepherd. Both cars left with green reaction times, Jackson getting the nudge by just over a hundredth. However, Shepherd and his flying Chevy II caught up the Derrick, but by too much as he broke out by nine thousandths of a second to give the win the Derrick Jackson. This capped Derrick’s great season as along with the National Dragster Challenge win (his 4th and 3rd straight) and brother Thomas Jackson III’s win made three Wally’s for the Jackson family.
