Hot Rod I Champion – Paul Comeau
While the points spread was a bit larger in Hot Rod I than Hot Rod II, the action was as intense as ever with late season event misses creating more action.
At the first event of the season (April 21st), Paul Comeau claimed victory over Tim McDaniel. The following point’s race (May 5th) McDaniel took it one round farther to win over Gary Fetters. Then at the Oldies but Goodies, Comeau was victorious over Wendell Dietrich in a race decided on a double breakout. Comeau then repeated for his third victory of the season, this time over Eric Reich. Then it got exciting. At the Hot Rod Nationals Paul Comeau the points leader was absent from competition! The final point’s event came into play September 29th, with Comeau holding a 30 point lead over second place Gary Fetters and 40 points over 3rd place Tim McDaniel. In a series of odd twists and turns, Paul Comeau was out of a car (his father’s car was hurt so he borrowed Ol’ Gold), Gary Fetter’s car (motor was broke), and McDaniel never showed up! Event finalists for the day were Nick Holmes over Todd McMillen. Because of Comeau’s sizeable lead, and finding a donor car to drive (the Front-Engine Dragster of Hilton Racing) to pad his lead, he was crowned your 2012 Hot Rod I Champion
