Ron Austin – 2011 Dragster/Roadster Series Champion & Year Recap
The 2011 Dragster & Roadster Series is filled with lots of fun memories for the racers, crew members, families and fans of this class. This class is designed for 1969 and older front-engine dragsters, roadsters and altereds, using a .4 pro tree handicapped start based on the driver’s selected dial-in. Electronics are not permitted. Five events were scheduled for 2011 but the final event was cancelled due to precipitation. A total of 24 racers competed in the series, with eleven racers competing in every event. Competition was intense with the championship decided by one round of racing.
The first event, held at the Season Opener, was won by Jamie Mata who drove her 32 Vicky to the win over Dave Gordon. Jamie also made it to the semi-finals at the Hot Rod Nationals and finished the series in third place. Dave Gordon with his dragster, was runner-up at the Oldies but Goodies and finished the series in fourth place.
Sammy Scott IV raced his dragster to victory at the Oldies but Goodies in June over a field of 21 racers. At the July Night of Fire event, Scott again made it to the finals where he fell victim to Ron Austin. It was that one round victory which made the difference in deciding the 2011 championship as Sammy finished in second place, one round behind Ron Austin.
Ron Austin, as previously mentioned earned the victory over Sammie Scott IV at the Night of Fire. He would repeat at the Hot Rod Nationals, earning the victory over Tommy Stanford. Stanford finished the season in fifth place. With the rain causing the final race to be cancelled, no points were earned at the Fall Classic and the standings were considered complete.
Looking back at the history of this series, Walt Skoczylas earned the first championship in 2007. Steve Marcus was crowned champion in 2008 and Jim Lindsay took top honors in 2010. Ron Austin earned his first championship in 2009 and is the first to repeat, having earned his second championship in 2011. Congratulations to Ron for his success. We anticipate continued growth and participation in this class and invite more racers to join in the fun in 2012. As they say, “Try it – You’ll like it !!!”
