Richard Dietrich – 2011 Top Gas Champion
Richard Dietrich is living proof of the fact that “if a racer intends to earn a championship in any series, attending every event is vitally important.” Such was the case in the Top Gas class in the 2011 Woodburn Dragstrip Nostalgia Hot Rod Series. A total of 47 racers competed in this series. Three racers competed in 4 events and finished second through fourth. Dietrich was the only racer who attended all five events and earned the top spot for his efforts. You can be sure that more racers will be gunning for that honor in 2012.
Dietrich was the sole entrant at the first event of the year on May 28th and made a single pass for the win. The Oldies but Goodies was the second event with 32 racers in attendance. Mike Miller topped Bill King in the finals for the big win. Danny Wargnier earned top honors July 9th with his victory over Carl Engel. Dietrich made it to the finals of the Hot Rod Nationals in August, but fell victim to Doug Heilman.
With four events down and four separate winners, what would happen at the final event? Each of the top four came to play. Danny Wargnier and Mike Miller won their semifinal rounds to meet in the finals. The win went to Wargnier which vaulted him into second place in the series standings, just 20 points short of the championship. Mike Miller finished third with Gary Wargnier in fourth. Bill King rounded out the top five. Congratulations to Richard Dietrich on winning the inaugural Nostalgia Hot Rod Series Top Gas Championship.
