Lamkin’s Monza Tops Street Machine II

Jim Lamkin was only able to attend three of the five events in the Street Machine II class of the 2011 Nostalgia Hot Rod Series. However, with one win, one runner-up and one semi-final finish, Jim earned sufficient points with his 1975 Monza to garner the championship in Street Machine II.

The first event in the series on May 28th was won by Marty Arrigotti. He met Jimmy Heriford in the final and piloted his ’64 Pontiac Catalina to victory. The second event was the Oldies but Goodies on June 25 and 26. Lamkin went all the way through five rounds to meet Derrick Jackson in the finals. Lamkin’s victory earned him a cool 100 points and moved him into the points lead after two events. Sherry Wilson won the third event over Gordon Cady, Jr. on July 7th. This was the second of the two events that Lamkin would miss in this series. After three events, Robert Bayless and Marty Arrigotti are tied for first with Lamkin and Ernie Lucas a mere 10 points behind in second place. Jon Waldorf won the Hot Rod Nationals over Jimmy Heriford on August 12th while Lamkin finished as a semi-finalist and moved into a tie with Robert Bayless for the points lead in the series. The final event would determine the series champion. The first round was all it took on September 10th as Lamkin advanced while Bayless did not. Lamkin would advance to the finals where Jimmy Heriford’s ’64 Galaxie would take the event win. Never-the-less, Jim Lamkin, who never lost in the first round in the series became the first Woodburn Dragstrip Nostalgia Hot Rod Series Street Machine II Champion.

Looking back, we can say what a great series it was. Jim Lamkin finished in first place with Robert Bayless, Marty Arrigotti, Ernie Lucas, Eric Clardy, and Jimmy Heriford finishing 2nd through 6th, respectively. Only 30 points (3 rounds) separated that cluster of drivers in the final points tally. A total of 59 racers competed in this series. With a good number of racers competing at the Oldies but Goodies and Hot Rod Nationals, a strong finish at those two events became increasingly important. We expect even more racers competing in 2012. With that fact in mind, it will be important to attend every event if a racer wants to finish among the top,
