Inline/Flathead Recap – Powers Cinches Championship
This was the first year for the Woodburn Dragstrip Nostalgia Hot Rod Series, which consists of five events including the Oldies but Goodies and the Hot Rod Nationals. There are seven separate classes that compete in this series. The Inline/Flathead class is designed specifically for cars equipped with inline six cylinder and flathead V-8 engines. Doug Powers won two of the five events to earn the championship over the 27 racers who competed in this series.
Portland racer, Jim Johnson drove his Nova to victory over Walt Skoczylas on May 28th to take the first event win for 2011. Michael Bjerkland and his ’68 Dart topped the ‘64 Dodge of Paradise, CA racer, Wendy Pine at the Oldies but Goodies on June 26th.
Doug Powers drove his ’64 Valiant to victory over Walt Pearce on July 9th. With his victory at this event and his semi-final finish at the Oldies but Goodies, Doug is able to move into the points lead after three events. At this time he held a 50-point spread over second place. That situation, however, could have changed abruptly at the Hot Rod Nationals where Powers was a first round victim. Two California racers would meet in the finals with the event win going to Fred Hultin over second time finalist, Wendy Pine. Fortunately for Powers, no other racers near the top of the standings were able to advance beyond the second round and Powers was able to maintain his 50-point lead over Jim Johnson.
The final event in the series was held September 10th with Powers securing the championship when Johnson was a first round runner-up. Powers earned the final event victory over the ’65 Valiant of Dave Mueller. With his victory, Powers extended his series’ points lead to 90 points over second place, Jim Johnson, Michael Bjerkland, Walt Skoczylas, and Wendy Pine finished third through fifth, respectively.
By partnering the schedule of events with the Slant 6 Association on the Saturday of the Oldies but Goodies and Hot Rod Nationals weekends, the Inline/Flathead class of the Woodburn Dragstrip Nostalgia Hot Rod Series has launched its inaugural season in fine fashion. Congratulations to 2011 Series Champion, Doug Powers. All racers should be prepared for a very competitive series in 2012.
