Ted Brown ~ 2016 Sunoco Race Fuels ET Motorcycle Champion
This class ran in conjunction with the Northwest Dragbike ET events in 2016, and the top six finishers in the point’s series were eligible to join Team Woodburn at the Summit Racing Series ET Finals. There were 9 races scheduled but due to Mother Nature, only 7 were able to be completed.
At the first Sunoco Race Fuels ET Motorcycle/Sled competition race held at the 40th Annual NWDRA Classic, on April 10th, the riders in the final round were Don DePeel and Buffy Taylor. DePeel had a single in the 1st round, and then defeated Allen Walsh and Ted Brown, while Taylor eliminated James Weiss, Mark Adams, and earned a single in round 3, to reach the final round. In that final, DePeel left with a starting line advantage with a .015 reaction time, and never looked back running 8.480 to his 8.42 dial, over Taylor’s 9.432 to her 9.21 dial, to claim the early win. DePeel was also the winner of the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with a .036 total package.
On May 21st the 43rd Annual Baxter Auto Parts/Bi-Mart Season Opener was unable to be completed. On May 22nd, the race was cancelled due to Mother Nature.
The next event was held on June 11th & 12th at the 41st Annual Rose Festival Drags. On Day 1, it was Don DePeel and John Plaster going to the finals. DePeel made it there by downing Bob Osborne, Mark Adams, and Mike Graver. For Plaster, the final round came about by defeating Ted Brown, earning a single in round 2, and defeating Bill Beckmeyer. In the final round, Plaster had the starting line advantage by .23, but at the finish both riders broke out. DePeel took the win as he was able to run closer to his dial-in. Randy Whiteman was the winner of the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with a .080 total package. Day 2 of the Rose Festival Drags brought Randy Whiteman and Buff Taylor into the final round. Whiteman took down Steve Salmon, Bob Osborne, and Don DePeel while on the other side of the ladder, Taylor took down John Plaster, Ted Brown and Mike Graver. In the final round, Whiteman had the starting line advantage of .020 and didn’t look back but Buffy Taylor broke out at the finish, handing the victory over to Randy Whiteman. Randy Whiteman was again the winner of the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with a .040 total package. At this point, the point’s standings were as follows: Don DePeel with 270 points, Buffy Taylor with 220 points, and Ted Brown right behind at 200 points.
The next weekend events on July 9th & July 10th were all Ted Brown. On the 9th, after defeating Bob Osborne and earning a single in round 2 & 3, he faced off with Don DePeel in the final round. DePeel reached the finals after defeating Gary Tokos, Randy Whiteman, and Steve Salmon. In the final round, the race was over before it started when DePeel turned on the dreaded red light by -.022, resulting in a win for Brown. Randy Whiteman was the winner of the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with a .054 total package.
On the 10th, Ted Brown and Buffy Taylor met in the final round of eliminations. Brown had a single in the first round, then went on to eliminate Steve Salmon and Don DePeel, while opposite him, Taylor went through Shane White and Tyler Baker, and a single in round 3 to reach the trophy round. In the finals, Brown blasted off the starting line with a massive advantage and used that to earn the victory after Taylor broke out on her dial. Ted Brown was the winner of the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with a .089 total package.
At the 23rd running of the Bi-Mart Nitro Motorcycle Nationals on August 20th & 21st, the weekend event was all Ted Brown again. On Saturday, it was Ted Brown and Tyler Baker. Brown made his way into the final round after defeating Mark Adams, Gary Tokos, Steve Salmon, and a single in round 4. Baker made it into the finals after eliminating Mike Graver, Cody Baldwin, a single in round 3, and Don DePeel. In the final round, Brown had the starting line advantage of .025 over Baker’s .093, but at the finish both riders had broken out on their dial. Brown took the win after running a 9.810 on his 9.84 dial to Baker’s 11.736 on his 11.89 dial. With one more race to complete, the point’s standings were as follows: Ted Brown with 350 Points, Don DePeel with 340 points, Randy Whiteman with 270 points, and Buffy Taylor with 220 points.
On Sunday, the 21st, at the last event for the Sunoco Race Fuels ET Series, it was Ted Brown and Rick Tedder who battled off in the final round. Brown’s journey took him through Steve Salmon, Mike Huffaker, a single in round 3, and Mark Adams. On the other side of the ladder, Tedder defeated Gary Tokos, Buffy Taylor, Cody Baldwin, and earned a single in the semifinal round. In the final, Brown gained a .073 advantage on the starting line and didn’t look back. Tedder encountered engine problems, meaning that Brown would be claiming the winner’s trophy and the season championship. Rick Tedder was the winner of the A-1 Performance Trans and Converters Package for the Points with a .056 total package.
With 440 Points and 4 Event Wins, the 2016 Sunoco Race Fuels ET Motorcycle Champion and voted Rider of the Year…. Ted Brown!!
