Jackson Sweeps Awards, Pitts Honored as Driver of the Year

A great time was had by all at the 35th Annual Woodburn Dragstrip Awards Banquet with many awards going out to some great people.

Aside from Woodburn Dragstrip celebrating their 14th NHRA/Summit Racing Equipment Division Six ET Finals Team Championship, Champions were crowned, special awards were given to those recognized by their fellow racers, along with Employees and Sponsors thanked for their support.

Champions were crowned in numerous series held at Woodburn Dragstrip: Fall ET & Jr Drag Racing Series, Sport Compact Series, NW Drag Bike Association, Dragster/Roadster, Super Shifter, Pro Nostalgia, Nostalgia Hot Rod Series, Jr Drag Racing Series, and Sunoco Race Fuels ET Series. In addition, special awards were given out in the Northwest Wholesale Perfect Light Club, A-1 Performance Transmissions & Converters Package for the Points and Kershaw Knives Racer of the Month.

In Jr Drag Racing, Race Cars for Kids and Jim Fluge were recognized for the spectacular job of promoting Jr Drag Racing, and were rewarded as such with Sponsor of the Year and Person of the Year went to Tom Turner. Carson Wheeler showed that he impressed his peers as well by being voted Rookie of the year for his Championship performance. Maria Marroquin also was recognized for being the Most Improved Driver, going from a handful of events last year to a championship in the Thunder category. For the Jr Driver of the Year category, the most sought after accomplishment, the voting was extremely tight. In the end Kyler Pitts was awarded with the honor, accomplishing a season second place finish in Thunder and also going undefeated in Seattle, winning the Division 6 E.T. Finals Championship in Thunder.

Voting was again tight in all of the awards and by the slimmest of margins, NAPA Auto Parts was recognized as tops from out list of great sponsors in contention for Sponsor of the Year. Lettie Hilles, with a quarter of a century’s worth of work reading the clocks, was honored with her first Employee of the Year award. Carl Wilkerson, going from 5 to 26 round wins, earned the Most Improved Driver award. Crew Member of the Year, awarded to the non-driver who contributed the most, was awarded to Judy Wargnier, Kris Wargnier, and Jane Weddle, for their contributions’ as well as Judy and Jane’s work parking the team at the E.T. Finals. Derrick Jackson completed the end-of-the-year sweep by winning just about everything: Sportsman Track Champion, National Dragster Challenge, Woodburn Dragstrip King of the Track, September Racer of the Month, Division 6 Race of Champions Representative, and your 2012 Driver of the Year.
