VP Racing 2008 Championship Series

17 events make up the VP Racing Fuels Championship Series and anyone can compete.  Top points earners in Super Pro (7.00-11.99), Pro (7.50-13.99), Sportsman (12.80 & Slower) and Motorcycle/Snowmobile will compete for Team Woodburn at the Summit Racing Series Finals at Firebird Raceway August 29, 30, and 31.

 VP FUELS CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES – 2008 
  1. Track management reserves the right to make procedure and/or rule changes as becomes necessary.
  2. This is a series of 17 events as posted in the Woodburn Dragstrip 2008 Calendar of Events.
  3. Racers are divided into four ET Bracket classes as per NHRA rules; namely, Super Pro(7.00 – 11.99), Pro(7.50 – 13.99), Sportsman( 12.80 and slower), and Motorcycle/Snowmobile(7.50 – 15.99).
  4. All entrants must meet safety and tech rules as stipulated in the NHRA rulebook.
  5. The standard operating procedure for VP Racing Fuels events will be as follows:  Gates open at 8 am.  Engines may be started after 8:30 am.  Tech inspection will occur in the staging lanes.  Cars may be brought to the lanes for tech inspection after 8:30 am.  SPORTSMAN class will be assigned to lanes 10, 11, and 12.  PRO class will be assigned to lanes 6, 7, 8, and 9.  SUPER PRO will be assigned to lanes 3, 4, and 5.  MOTORCYCLE/SNOWMOBILE will be assigned to lane 1, entering from behind the tower. (This information may change when VP RACING FUELS events are held in conjunction with major events.)
  6. Time trials are scheduled to begin at 9 am.  The usual procedure is to begin with SPORTSMAN, which will be followed in sequence by PRO, SUPER PRO, and MOTORCYCLE/SNOWMOBILE.  The intent is to give each class three time-trial sessions.  The final time-trial session is also known as the “Dash-for-Cash”.   Drivers will select a dial-in for their “Dash-for-Cash” attempt.  The driver’s reaction time added to the difference between dial-in and ET will determine the driver’s package.  The best package will win the “Dash-for-Cash” award for that day.  Red-light starts and/or break-outs will negate any package.
  7. QUALIFYING & LADDERS -  Sportsman and Pro classes are random pairing until 16 or less cars remain.  Cars will then be laddered based on previous round reaction time.  Super Pro class will buy a $5 ticket to be turned in and will be laddered first round based on R/T achieved during all scheduled qualifying attempts.  Motorcycle/Snowmobile will also have a first-round ladder based on R/T during qualifying.
  8. POINTS – Drivers will earn points at each event in the series.  The total points earned will be tabulated to determine final standings for the series.  In the event of a complete rain out, no points will be awarded to any driver.  If an event must be discontinued after tech inspection, points will be awarded to each driver in attendance, based on the last completed round for their class.  Points will be awarded as follows.  Drivers will earn 30 points upon completing tech inspection.  Each round won in competition will add 10 points.   An extra10 points and 1 round win will be awarded for winning an event.  In addition, 10 points and 1 round win is awarded for winning “Dash-for-Cash”. 
  9. TIE-BREAKER -  The following procedures will be used:  1) if a tie exists, the driver who earned the most round wins will win the tie-breaker. (Dash-for-Cash and Event Win will each count as a round win.)  2) if a tie still exists, the driver who earned the most points at the most recent race will win the tie-breaker. 3) if a tie still exists, we will go back to the previous race, until the tie is broken.
  10. VOUCHERS - A racer who is unable to attend an event may use a voucher.  A racer may use a total of two vouchers  in this series.  A voucher will be credited only if Woodburn Dragstrip is notified via telephone, email, US Mail, or in person prior to the points being computed at the conclusion of the event.  Neither car nor driver is required to be present on the date the voucher is credited.  Each voucher will credit 24 points to the racer. 
  11. NO-SHOW FORMS - In the event of breakage, a racer who is not able to stage their car must report to the tower and complete a “no-show” form.  The racer will earn the amount of points based on number of rounds won.
  12. SECONDARY DRIVER - Racers are allowed to sign up a secondary driver who will earn points in the place of the primary driver.  The secondary driver must be signed up by May 18, 2008 and must compete in the same car with the same number as the primary driver has driven for the majority of events.
  13. CHANGING CLASSES – No points may be moved from one class to another.
  14. ET FINALS TEAM MEMBERS – Drivers will be invited to become members of Woodburn Dragstrip ET Finals Team based on final points tabulation.  The team will be composed of racers as follows: 14 Super Pro racers, 18 Pro racers, 12 Sportsman racers, and 4 Motorcycle/Snowmobile racers.

Drag Racing School - What is Bracket Racing?

Bracket, or ET, racing is a great way to get into the sport of drag racing.  You don't need a lot of money or special equipment to get started, but it helps to know "the basics."

What is a Bracket Race?

 

A bracket drag race is a straight-line acceleration contest between two cars, usually starting at different times, from a standing start over a specified distance, usually a quarter mile or an eighth mile.  Racers line up in front of a countdown device, called a Christmas Tree.  When they leave the starting line, timers record how long it takes them to reach the finish line. This is called elapsed time, or ET for short.  Top speed is also recorded.

Getting Started

 

The best way to get your feet wet is to go to a "test and tune" session (most tracks have them weekly). For a small fee, you can practice your starting line procedure, learn how the car reacts to tuning changes, and make passes down the track without the pressure of racing against someone.

You should also take time to watch how other racers do things, and most importantly, ask questions. Most racers will be happy to give you pointers on improving your technique.

Competing

 

When you're ready to race against other people, you can compete in your track's weekly series.  Your car will be put in a category, or class, based on the elapsed time of your car.  Top speed is not a factor in bracket racing.

You will need to determine how quick you think your car will be.  This is called the dial-in.  When you are matched up with another car, the dial-ins are compared and the slower car is given a head start equal to the difference between the two.  To win, you want to run as close to your dial-in as possible without going faster, or "breaking out."

You can also win if both cars run faster than the dial-ins (called running under) and you are closest to your dial-in. If both of you get down the track exactly at your dial-in or have the same breakout, the driver who reacted quickest to the Christmas Tree - called reaction time, or RT - wins the race. Here are possible outcomes for a race betwen Car A with a 14.50 second dial-in and Car B with a 15.25 second dial-in:

Car A runs 14.55 seconds, Car B runs 15.35 seconds
Car A wins (runs closest to dial-in without breaking out)

Car A runs 14.40 seconds, Car B runs 15.20 seconds
Car B wins (both cars run under, Car B runs closest to dial-in)

Car A runs 14.50 seconds with .510 RT,
Car B runs 15.25 seconds with .505 RT
Car B wins (runs at dial-in, has better reaction time)
