VP FUELS CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES – 2008
- Track management reserves the right to make procedure and/or rule changes as becomes necessary.
- This is a series of 17 events as posted in the Woodburn Dragstrip 2008 Calendar of Events.
- Racers are divided into four ET Bracket classes as per NHRA rules; namely, Super Pro(7.00 – 11.99), Pro(7.50 – 13.99), Sportsman( 12.80 and slower), and Motorcycle/Snowmobile(7.50 – 15.99).
- All entrants must meet safety and tech rules as stipulated in the NHRA rulebook.
- The standard operating procedure for VP Racing Fuels events will be as follows: Gates open at 8 am. Engines may be started after 8:30 am. Tech inspection will occur in the staging lanes. Cars may be brought to the lanes for tech inspection after 8:30 am. SPORTSMAN class will be assigned to lanes 10, 11, and 12. PRO class will be assigned to lanes 6, 7, 8, and 9. SUPER PRO will be assigned to lanes 3, 4, and 5. MOTORCYCLE/SNOWMOBILE will be assigned to lane 1, entering from behind the tower. (This information may change when VP RACING FUELS events are held in conjunction with major events.)
- Time trials are scheduled to begin at 9 am. The usual procedure is to begin with SPORTSMAN, which will be followed in sequence by PRO, SUPER PRO, and MOTORCYCLE/SNOWMOBILE. The intent is to give each class three time-trial sessions. The final time-trial session is also known as the “Dash-for-Cash”. Drivers will select a dial-in for their “Dash-for-Cash” attempt. The driver’s reaction time added to the difference between dial-in and ET will determine the driver’s package. The best package will win the “Dash-for-Cash” award for that day. Red-light starts and/or break-outs will negate any package.
- QUALIFYING & LADDERS - Sportsman and Pro classes are random pairing until 16 or less cars remain. Cars will then be laddered based on previous round reaction time. Motorcycle/Snowmobile will have a first-round ladder based on R/T during qualifying. Super Pro drivers will buy a yellow $40 tech card and will also be laddered first round based on R/T achieved during all scheduled qualifying attempts. S/P drivers also will need to give projected “Dash for Cash” dial-ins to Lori at the Booster Club booth prior to their “Dash for Cash” attempt.
- POINTS – Drivers will earn points at each event in the series. The total points earned will be tabulated to determine final standings for the series. In the event of a complete rain out, no points will be awarded to any driver. If an event must be discontinued after tech inspection, points will be awarded to each driver in attendance, based on the last completed round for their class. Points will be awarded as follows. Drivers will earn 30 points upon completing tech inspection. Each round won in competition will add 10 points. An extra10 points and 1 round win will be awarded for winning an event. In addition, 10 points and 1 round win is awarded for winning “Dash-for-Cash”.
- TIE-BREAKER - The following procedures will be used: 1) if a tie exists, the driver who earned the most round wins will win the tie-breaker. (Dash-for-Cash and Event Win will each count as a round win.) 2) if a tie still exists, the driver who earned the most points at the most recent race will win the tie-breaker. 3) if a tie still exists, we will go back to the previous race, until the tie is broken.
- VOUCHERS - A racer who is unable to attend an event may use a voucher. A racer may use a total of two vouchers in this series. A voucher will be credited only if Woodburn Dragstrip is notified via telephone, email, US Mail, or in person prior to the points being computed at the conclusion of the event. Neither car nor driver is required to be present on the date the voucher is credited. Each voucher will credit 24 points to the racer.
- NO-SHOW FORMS - In the event of breakage, a racer who is not able to stage their car must report to the tower and complete a “no-show” form. The racer will earn the amount of points based on number of rounds won.
- SECONDARY DRIVER - Racers are allowed to sign up a secondary driver who will earn points in the place of the primary driver. The secondary driver must be signed up by May 18, 2008 and must compete in the same car with the same number as the primary driver has driven for the majority of events.
- CHANGING CLASSES – No points may be moved from one class to another.
- ET FINALS TEAM MEMBERS – Drivers will be invited to become members of Woodburn Dragstrip ET Finals Team based on final points tabulation. The team will be composed of racers as follows: 14 Super Pro racers, 18 Pro racers, 12 Sportsman racers, and 4 Motorcycle/Snowmobile racers.

GENERAL REGULATIONS & Standard Operating ProceduresHELMET — Drivers of all cars 13.99 and quicker are required to have an approved helmet. See the NHRA Rulebook for specific applications. DIAL-INS— Must be visible from the tower, placed on passenger side, front and rear window. It must be in place before cars leave the head of the staging lanes (crosswalk for Super Pro) and may not be changed without the Event Directors approval. Check the scoreboard before staging. ABSOLUTELY NO RE-RUNS DUE TO INCORRECT DIAL-IN.CAR NUMBERS — required 6” high by 1 1/2” wide on both sides and front & rear window. Shoe polish is not permitted in Pro and Super Pro.RESTRICTED ACCESS — Drivers and crew must sign the Release & Waiver of Liability at each event. Signers will be given a wristband, which must be visible each time you enter the restricted area. Waivers can be signed at the Pro Shop on the east side of the facility. Violations result in loss of time trial, disqualification, or other sanctions. Parents must sign a Minor Release and Waiver of Liability and Indemnity Agreement for any minor between the ages of 15 and 17.LANE CHOICE — Determined by coin flip on all laddered eliminators, non-laddered competitors will be assigned lanes by staging personnel.RE-RUNS — In the event of a timing malfunction drivers may change their dial-ins. Competitors must run lanes as in previously round.RANDOM PAIRING — You are considered paired with another competitor once staging control has pointed to both competitors (rather that happens in the staging lanes or water box). Once paired if one competitor is unable to compete (not start, broken or unable to make the call when so directed by staging control) the other competitor will receive a bye run. The competitor able to make the call must stage under engine power and take the tree to advance to the next round unless otherwise instructed by the Event Director.LADDERS — All qualifying and ladders will be based on reaction time. Super Pro will be paired first round, based on all qualifying runs. Pro and Sportsman will be laddered when field is reduced to 16 cars or less. Motorcycle, High School, and Jr. Dragster classes will be laddered 1st round.PAYOUT — Payouts are based on car count. All classes pay to the semi-finals. If there are only three semi-finalists, the odd-lot money goes to the driver who lost in the quarter-finals with the best reaction time.SINGLE RUNS -- The competitor with the best REACTION TIME in the most recent round will be pulled aside and will run last. If there is an odd number of cars, this competitor will receive a bye run. This run WILL NOT count as a single once the remaining cars have been laddered. PIT VEHICLESPlease help keep traffic in the pits to a minimum. Operators of any vehicle must have a valid state driver’s license. IMPORTANT: Absolutely no one under 16 years of age may operate any vehicle or anything with wheels. This includes but is not limited to: golf carts, quads, 3-wheelers, motorcycles, mopeds, bikes, rollerblades, roller skates, skateboards, scooters, and tricycles. Violations of this rule may result in disqualification of the competitor or anyone associated to the violator, and/or suspension from future events for that competitor. POINTSIn each series, drivers earn points for that series at Woodburn Dragstrip. Once time trials begin, points will be credited. Drivers earn 30 points upon completing tech inspection. Each round win adds 10 points. An event win adds an additional 10 points. Winning the “Dash for Cash” adds an additional 10 points. RAIN OUTS— If a race gets rained out during time trials, all drivers in attendance will earn 30 points. If a race gets rained out during eliminations, drivers earn points based on the last completed round in their class. As an example in Pro Bracket, if a race is halted at any point prior to the completion of round 4 all Pro drivers would get points based on the results from round 3. SECONDARY DRIVER—Racers are allowed to sign up a Secondary Driver who will earn points if the Primary Driver is forced to miss an event. The Secondary Driver must be signed up no later than May 20, 2008. The Secondary Driver must compete in the same car with the same number as the primary driver. The secondary driver must possess all driver credentials and safety equipment as required for that class of competition. The Woodburn Team member is the driver who has driven in 51% or more of the contested series events. COMPUTING POINTS—All events in all series count for points in 2008. NO-SHOW FORMS—To insure the proper crediting of points, racers who are not able to stage their car for any round of eliminations, must report to the tower and complete a “no-show form”. This guarantees that the competitor will not be overlooked when points are tallied. CHANGING CLASSES— NO points may be moved from one class to another. EXCEPTION: JR. DRAGSTER —30 points per race earned for passing tech may be moved to another class. This is limited to one time for no more than 3 races. Therefore, no more than 90 points total may be moved from one class to another. VOUCHERS -- In the VP Fuels Series and JDRL Series, each racer is permitted to use two vouchers in the event that he/she is unable to attend an event. Use of a voucher will credit the racer with 24 points. For a voucher to be credited to a racer, Woodburn Dragstrip must be notified via telephone, email, US Mail, or in person prior to the points being computed at the conclusion of that event. Neither car nor driver is required to be present on the date the voucher is credited. TIE-BREAKERS— In each designated series, the following procedures will be used: 1) The driver with the most overall points wins. 2) If a tie exists, the winner is determined by the racer with the most round wins. (Dash-for-Cash and Event wins: each will count as one round win.) 3) If a tie exists, the driver who earned the most points at the last race of the season wins the tie-breaker. 4) If a tie still exists, we will go back to the previous race, and so on until the tie is broken. YEAR-END AWARDS— Season discount passes will be given to the 1st place finishers in the VP Fuels Championship Series and the Jr. Drag Racing Series, as will the Champions of the Import & Sport Compact Series. Racers in the VP Fuels Championship Series must compete for Team Woodburn at the ET Finals to claim any year-end awards. DASH FOR CASH— The Dash For Cash is held during the final round of time trials at all VP Racing Fuels Championship Series Events. Each driver dials in. The driver in each class who records the best “Package” earns product or gift certificates from a sponsoring company, plus 10 points. The best “package” is determined based on reaction time and elapsed time. For example, a racer who runs 10.010 on a 10.00 dial with a .005 reaction time will have a .015 “package”. NHRA Division 6 Summit ET Finals56 racers will earn the right to represent Woodburn Dragstrip at the NHRA Division 6 Summit ET hosted by Firebird Raceway Aug 29-31, 2008. The breakdown of team members will be: Super Pro—14 drivers; Pro—18; Sportsman—12; Motorcycle—4; High School—2; Sports-Compact --2; Jr. Fast—1; Jr. Lightning—1; Jr. Thunder—1; and Jr. 8 & 9 Year Old—1. Racers earn the right to become a Woodburn Dragstrip Team Member by earning points throughout the season. Priority is given to those with the most points. LAND OF THE LEADERS ET CHALLENGEDrivers who have an NHRA number are eligible to compete in four races to earn ET CHALLENGE points. The driver with the greatest number of points in Division 6 will be rewarded at the NHRA Awards ceremony. Racers may choose to enter four ET CHALLENGE events at any number of tracks. Points are not transferable from one track to another. Woodburn Dragstrip’s dates in 2008 will be: April 27, May 25, July 27, and August 16. RPM CHASSIS NATIONAL DRAGSTER CHALLENGEAll drivers who compete in at least one VP Fuels Championship Series Event will be invited to race in this event on September 21, 2008. Winners in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Motorcycle at this event will each receive a special-edition NHRA Wally. Also at this event, the season champions in each of the four mentioned classes will face off for the NHRA King of the Track Wally. The entrants will be laddered based on points. SPLIT TREE and CROSSTALK will be used for this race. The Timing System COMPULINK — Woodburn Dragstrip uses the latest Compulink Timing System. Listed below are some of the most commonly– referred-to features: AUTOSTART — The Autostart System will automatically start the Tree at a random pace within a given window. The starter flips the switch when both cars pre-stage, activating the system. If one competitor stages and the other does not complete the staging process within 15 seconds the system will automatically red light that competitor. Once both cars have staged, the Tree will come on between 0.7 and 1.4 seconds later, depending on the class. The system will vary the start sequence by randomly adding up to 0.2 seconds, preventing racers from “guessing” when the Tree will come on. The starter is able to stop the sequence if necessary, and can activate the Tree himself by “overriding” if that is required. CROSSTALK — This program allows the Tree to be fully shielded, but still allows drivers in Super Pro and Top Comp classes to cross-over. CROSSTALK functions by lighting the top bulb in both lanes at the exact same time. This allows both cars a direct “hit” on the Tree. The slower car’s Tree will continue counting down as normal. The quicker car’s top light will remain lit for the duration of the handicap, plus the normal 0.5 second, before counting down the second and third lights as normal. The driver of the faster car in a pair may cancel the CROSSTALK system by including an “N” behind their dial (i.e. 7.85N). This system is used only in Super Pro, Top Comp, Second Chance, and NW Top Sportsman and Top Dragster at Woodburn Dragstrip. If you have any question or do not understand how cross talk works please consult with one of Woodburn Dragstrip tower personnel. Drivers wishing cross talk should make sure that it does not indicate cross talk has been canceled on the score board in their lane. There will be NO re-runs for incorrect tree configurations. SPLIT-TREE — The VP Fuels Motorcycle/Snowmobile class is run on a Split Tree. Each rider can choose either a .4 Pro Tree or a .5 Full Tree. During time trials, riders will be split into two groups. However, during eliminations, the default tree will be the .500 Full Tree. Riders choosing the Pro Tree are required to place an “P" at the end of their dial (i.e. 10.05P). A symbol will appear in front of the dial posted on the scoreboard (u10.05) to indicate that a Pro Tree is in place. Riders should check the scoreboard before staging. There will be NO re-runs for incorrect tree configurations. LED’s — Woodburn Dragstrip uses COMPULINK LED lights in the Tree at every event. These units are approximately 0.03-second faster than an incandescent bulb. They are also much sturdier than an ordinary light. We do not expect any instances of bulb failure. Please note that all LED lights are not equal. The LED’s sold at some outlets are inferior to the COMPULINK LED units used at Woodburn Dragstrip. COURTESY STAGING — Out of courtesy to your fellow competitor, we encourage COURTESY STAGING. As you stage your car, please pull forward until the first light (pre-stage) comes on. At that point, you should wait until the car in the opposite lane has done the same. When both cars have pre-staged, either one may then pull into the second beam which fully stages that car. Once the first car has staged, the second car has10 seconds to pull into the stage beam. If it does not, the red light will come on in that lane, and the opponent will be given a single. PLEASE NOTE: The system registers a car as staged if the stage light is on for at least 0.6 seconds. Therefore, be extra cautious when “bumping” into the lights. DEEP STAGING — Some drivers prefer to pull into the beams so far that they turn off the pre-stage light. This procedure is illegal in certain NHRA classes. (see rulebook) If you choose to deepstage, you do so at your own risk. Do not write “deep” on your car. The starter is under no obligation to wait for a driver to deep stage. Dragsters and Roadsters Series: At four events only: 1969 or older dragster or roadster .4 pro tree, handicapped start based on your dial in. Electronics are NOT permitted. See www,woodburndragstrip.com or Walk Skoczylas at Telephone number 503-642-9513
